The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, or UNC for short, is a public research university located in Chapel Hill, which is a town in Orange County, situated in the US state of North Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 54 500 inhabitants, during the 2007 census, growing from a number of nearly 49 000, estimated during the 2000 census.
UNC was chartered in December, 1789, by the North Carolina General Assembly, and it first started to enroll students in 1795, being the oldest public university in the United States and the only such institution to confer degrees in the 18th century, also being one of the original 8 schools known as a Public Ivy. Today, UNC is the flagship of the University of North Carolina system, being highly ranked in both teaching and research, in publications such as U.S. News & World Report and BusinessWeek.
The university has an enrollment of over 28,000 students, to whom it offers 71 bachelor’s and 107 master’s degree programs, including 74 doctoral degree programs, many of its professional schools being highly ranked by various important publications, including Forbes Magazine or U.S. News & World Report. UNC’s business school’s Executive MBA program has been ranked 5th in USA, other highly ranked schools including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, journalism and mass communication, among others, placing UNC in the top ten public universities for research.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the North Carolina Tar Heels, who compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and Atlantic Coast Conference, in various sports. The NC Tar Heels have experienced victory, in many of their sports, in the past years, having won a total of 37 NCAA team championships in six different sports, among other athletic achievements, of which 20 are in women’s soccer, 6 are in women’s field hockey, 4 in men’s lacrosse, 5 in men’s basketball, one in women’s basketball and one in men’s soccer.
